My Black is Beautiful

My People

The night is beautiful,
So the faces of my people.

The stars are beautiful,
So the eyes of my people.

Beautiful, also, is the sun.
Beautiful, also, are the souls of my people.

Langston Hughes

  1. Langston Hughes is my all time favorite secular poet. I love him and I love that poem (my favorite is The Dream Keeper). I must highlight it in my next word love Wednesday post :)…oh, I am here via Tom @ Morning Erection

    • He is mine as well. I remember being a kid in 3rd grade and not really understanding too much of the world and race, etc. when I read the Negro Mother by him and suddenly feeling this profound sense of accomplishment settling over me… it was like I didn’t get it but I knew we’d come a long way from something and I should be proud. I had an ex write me a letter with Dream Keeper, lol! Oh memories, memories. I’ll have to add you to my blogroll!
